The Dissertation Begins...

I am currently writing the dreaded dissertation.
My topic is the contradiction of William Morris, leader of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
Why did I choose it? I ask myself that question every time I open the file, which currently consists of four pages, two of them being the title page and the contents.
William Morris, is obviously feeling how I'm feeling...
He probably has a glass of wine in the other hand and all...

Minor Project 'Workplace 2030' 2012-2013

So it's third year, I've just finished my minor project. We had three choices to choose from and I chose 'Workplace 2030' in which I had to create a vision of how the work place would be in generations to come.

I went on the different route of making the workplace much more natural, minimal and a form of escapism, rather than the typical futuristic idea surrounded by technology. The sheets below are to be submitted along with my sketchbook which is full of development sketches.

Utopia Trial Week 2011-2012

My project at Utopia was to design an office for Halo Media. I was given the site plan and had to move on from there. Here are some of my renders for the office.

Utopia Bristol GUCH competition 2011-2012

This project was for another years placement at Utopia, Bristol.
We were given a plan and visited the site to carry out a survey and take further measurements. We had to create an office space for a charity called GUCH, (now known as The Somerville Foundation) a charity for people with congenital heart disease. We had to submit our work online to Utopia and over the space of two days, everyone in the class were to be interviewed individually and had to present their work. I am happy to mention that I was also shortlisted for this and had to spend a week at Utopia before they made a decision. Myself along with a few others were offered the placement, in which only one person ended up taking it. The majority of us made the difficult decision of carrying on with our studies.

The final sheets

For uni, we had to provide a simple animation using 3ds Max as part of our submission. Here it is...

Trip Advisor for FITCH competition 2011-2012

As part of a competition in university (put forward by FITCH London) we had to choose one brand out of four, ASOS, Trip Advisor, iTunes or Timeout. My chosen brand was Trip Advisor. We had to create a space that would best represent the brand. There were numerous other universities involved in this. Four would be picked from each university for an interview, in which those who were successful (two winners) would get a years work placement with FITCH. I am happy to say that I was one of the four shortlisted for an interview. Although I did not get the placement, I am very proud of myself for getting so far for such a well known and successful company.

Architectural Analysis 2011-2012

We were put into pairs for an architectural analysis, in which we were given a building to research. We had to produce two sheets with supporting images and text. The building I had to study was the INMOS microprocessor factory in Newport, South Wales.

The INMOS factory was designed by
Richard Rogers.

First page discussing the concept of the factory, as well as
the chosen environment and the geometry.

Second page discussing the layout and structure, as well as
service spaces such as plant rooms.

Architecture Technologies Bridge Project 2010-2011

This project was based on architecture. Using small rolled up sheets of newspaper, in groups, we had to design a bridge that would span a metre long. Each bridge was then tested by hanging bottles of water of it and adding more weight each time. Ours won, it was so strong our lecturer even managed to do a press up on it! Here is our newspaper bridge...

Tension & Compression was important.
