The Gasometer Year One 2010-2011

The Gasometer was a project introduced in the first year. The site of the Gasometer was in Grangetown, Cardiff, UK (see below)

After a recent visit to Hong Kong in March 2011, I took my inspiration for its new lease of life from a huge, but caged bird reservation. The aim was for it to house wild birds, where the public could enter and watch them fly freely whilst being protected and admired.

The bird reservation was large with raised
walkways creating a beautiful and peaceful environment
I had only just got used to using Google SketchUp (and any 3D software for that matter) so bear with the basic render. However it gives you an idea of what I wanted to achieve.

Water surrounds the outer edge of the gasometer, reflecting what
it was once used for. The bump in the ground also reflects the original
forms of the gasometer as it used to be. The water also supplies for the birds
as a bath and drinking feature.
Finely caged, and being very high up, it allows space for the birds to fly.
From further away you can see the collection of raised walkways.
Raised walkways and a lot of green area for vegetation and trees, in order
to create as much as a natural and peaceful environment as possible.

Below are some of my development sketches.

At some point I will edit these renders, now that I have a fair knowledge of PhotoShop, so they are much more appealing...give them a little more justice.
